Uwe Walter, today's managing director, laid the corner stone of Walter Graphtek GmbH in the early 70s when he started selling medical and industrial measuring instruments. Around 1980, this company began to develop its own products in cooperation with Hannover Medical College, Eppendorf University Hospital in Hamburg, Lübeck Medical University, and other university clinics. The products then developed were mainly stimulators, which were used as additional devices for neurological measuring instruments, and biosignal amplifiers, which were used for clinical experimental purposes. In 1986, the experience gained in this sphere resulted in the development of the Alpha-9. When first presented to the public at the German EEG-Society's congress in 1987, the Alpha-9 received a positive echo.

The Alpha-9 was a device for ambulatory recording and computer-aided evaluation of long-term EEGs. Signals were recorded analogue, and digitized for review and archiving. The new generation, Alpha-16-D, works completely digital. |
On the 1st of June 1989, Walter Graphtek GmbH was founded. The Alpha-9 technology was the basis for the PL-EEG which Walter Graphtek GmbH began developing in the first year. The PL-EEG set new trends on the standard EEG market. As a stand-alone unit, the PL-EEG was primarily sold to research centers. The network version with evaluation stations was applied in standard diagnostic processes.
The experience in network technology gained by Walter Graphtek GmbH since then distinguishes the company from its competitors and serves as an important basis for business to this day. A central aim of the company was to build a network between all neurophysiological measuring units such as EEG, EP, EMG, and US. On achieving this aim, the Walter Graphtek GmbH focused its development capacity on the integration of all neurophysiological examination and analysis methods within one complete system.
During the following years, Walter Graphtek GmbH developed further systems such as the Videometry or the PL-EEG Portable using the PL-EEG as a basic unit. Progress in computer technology enabled a constantly more cost-efficient production of these systems so that smaller clinics or a general practitioner can afford them, too.
| With the PL-EEG Portable, Walter Graphtek GmbH belongs to the small group of suppliers offering portable EEG-devices. The PL-EEG Portable is used for ambulatory care at the scene of an accident and to determine the time of death in hospitals which have no EEG-equipment. | ![]() |
In 1992, the worldwide distribution of Walter Graphtek GmbH systems was handed over to the Danish company Dantec Medical A/S. Since then, the PL-EEG has been successfully marketed in Australia, Bolivia, India, Japan, China, and Sweden.
In February 1995, Walter Graphtek CZ in the Czech Republic was founded.
In the years 1999 to 2003, the PL-EEG was developed on basis of the Windows operating system exclusively for Medtronic.
Since then, the PL-EEG continuously has been improved. The PL-EEG of today with its software PL-Winsor is a modular system, capable of covering a plurality of neurophysiological applications in research as well as in standard diagnostics such as videometry, longterm studies and online CSA/DSA, ambulatory EEG, sleep studies, evoked potentials, or neurobehavioral studies.
Together with its partners inside and outside of Europe, Walter Graphtek maintains a growing sales and service network. Safe remote servicing procedures have been established, which enable Walter Graphtek’s staff to directly work with computers all over the globe, for example to integrate the PL-EEG into hospital information systems via Health Level 7.
